Two Floyd Memorial Physicians Awarded 2010 MediStar Awards

The MediStar Awards are given by Medical News magazine and recognize excellence in healthcare in the Kentucky/ Southern Indiana region. Two Floyd Memorial physicians were chosen to receive awards at the ceremony on March 30, 2010.

Mark Slaughter, MD, board certified cardiothoracic surgeon, won the prestigious Physician of the Year award. The honor is presented to the physician who demonstrates outstanding leadership on a local, state or national level to improve accessibility, affordability and quality of healthcare in our region. Dr. Slaughter’s progression of the fields of heart transplantation and Ventricular Assist Devices (VADs) were noted as key reasons for his receipt of the award.

Anthony Dragun, MD, board certified radiation oncologist with the Cancer Center of Indiana, won the Healthcare Advocacy Award, recognizing an individual that is an effective advocate at the local, state or national level concerning issues such as access to care and support of healthy lifestyles.Dr. Dragun’s extensive work in the field of breast cancer research was a deciding factor in his receipt of the award.

Floyd Memorial Plastic Surgeon Launches Pro-Bono Veterans Program

Donn R. Chatham, MD, a board certified New Albany facial plastic surgeon and immediate past president of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, recently helped launch a humanitarian program for veterans called “Faces of Honor.” Under the program, military veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan may receive free plastic surgery care from volunteer facial plastic surgeons. Dr. Chatham explained, “We designed Faces of Honor to show our unwavering support for those who protect America and other countries.
