Focus on Physicians – Radiology

Radiologists utilize medical imaging technologies to diagnose and sometimes treat diseases or conditions. Images are obtained from a variety of technologies, including X-ray, nuclear medicine, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, just to name a few. Interventional Radiologists are trained to perform typically minimally invasive imaging procedures such as angiograms or biopsies utilizing medical imaging technologies.

Most radiologic technologies utilize small doses of radiation or radioactive material in conjunction with high-tech equipment to create detailed images of the human body. MRI is another specialized area that utilizes a magnetic field to produce images. These images are stored, interpreted, and made available to the ordering physician in a digital image format. The radiologist is trained in correlating these images with other examinations and tests to diagnose or treat the patient’s condition.

Radiologists must complete prerequisite undergraduate training, four years of medical school, and five to seven years of intensive post-graduate training. The first year of postgraduate training usually consists of various internship rotations in the medical field, followed by a four-year residency in diagnostic radiology. Following completion of residency, radiologists may either begin their practice or enter into sub-specialty fellowship programs one to two years in length.
