Floyd Memorial Laboratory/Blood Bank Earns AABB Accreditation

January 13, 2009

The Floyd Memorial Laboratory/Blood Bank has earned accreditation from the American Association of Blook Banks (AABB) for transfusion services. The accreditation, which is good for two years, follows an intensive on-site assessment by specially trained AABB assessors and measures the level of medical, technical and administrative performance within the facility against the standards set by AABB.

“Floyd Memorial voluntarily sought AABB Accreditation because the program assists facilities in achieving excellence by promoting a level of professional and medical expertise that contributes to top quality performance,” said Floyd Memorial President and CEO Mark D. Shugarman. “The quality of our transfusion activities is the direct result of a team effort by multiple hospital departments.”

The minimum requirements for accreditation are based primarily on a set of specific standards for the area in which accreditation is being sought. These standards not only reflect the level of professional proficiency for blood banks and transfusion services in the United States, but also provide the basis for practice in similar facilities around the world.
