The Floyd County Commissioners recently appointed Rita Hudson Shourds, Ed.D., to serve on Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services’ Board of Trustees. Shourds began her term early due to the recent resignation of Ernest “Bill” Smith, who moved from the area. Her first official meeting was in October 2011 and her 4-year term will then begin in January 2012.
Shourds is the Chancellor of Ivy Tech Community College of Southern Indiana. She has held this position since 2005. Shourds has led the campus during a time of unprecedented growth. The college has exceeded enrollment records for the past six years. The campus has also grown in size with the opening of Ogle Hall, a new, 82,000 square-foot building featuring an auditorium, art gallery and much needed classroom space. The college also set a record in the number of graduates in 2010-11, with over 600 graduating.
Through the years, Shourds has remained very active in the community, including current service on the YMCA board, Leadership Southern Indiana and Jeffersonville Carnegie Library. In addition to her community service, Shourds received the 2011 PCS Norman Melhiser Samaritan Award and was named the Most Admired Woman in Education by Today’s Woman magazine in 2010.
Shourds and her family live in Floyds Knobs.
