Advanced Outpatient Surgery Brings Fast Relief from Debilitating Pain

July 8, 2011

Connie Beanblossom-Pryor is a busy working mother and wife. Unfortunately, severe back and neck pain had become a constant in her life. And the numbness and weakness in her right arm was so bad she couldn’t do everyday tasks like loading the dishwasher, opening a bottle or working in her garden. “I was even having balance problems,” she said. “I couldn’t walk in a straight line. I knew it was time to have the surgery that Dr. Majd recommended. Now, I wish I’d done it sooner!”

“We have a wonderful team at the Spine Center that includes physicians who specialize in physical medicine and rehabilitation as well as orthopedic and spine surgery and neurosurgery. By working together, we can treat even the most complex cases. We have the ability to handle nearly all spinal disorders without having to send patients anywhere else for their care.”

“We make sure you get to the right physician quickly. When patients call, they reach a real person, not a phone tree. We do all the scheduling, get physician referrals and reports, and get insurance authorization to make sure the patient is taken care of. Because we offer comprehensive care and services, patients get all the care they need, all in one place.”

“I want people to know they don’t need to wait in pain or live on pain medicine. Immediately after I woke up from surgery, my pain was gone. The numbness in my arm was gone. My balance was back. And so was my life.”

Mohammad E. Majd, MD, is a specialist in orthopedic and spine surgery at the Floyd Memorial Spine Center. As he explained, “Connie had two herniated disks and degeneration in her neck. This was compressing her spinal cord and the nerve roots that go to her shoulders and arms. When a patient has a condition like this, we first try to treat them with options like physical therapy and injections to ease the pain. Many patients improve and don’t need surgery. But in Connie’s case, surgery was the solution.”

Minimally Invasive Surgery Rebuilds Connie’s Neck

Dr. Majd described Connie’s surgery. “We first made a very small incision in the front, right side of her neck,” he said. “Then, we removed two disks and a portion of a vertebra. This relieved the compression on her spinal cord and nerve. I then used her own bone from the vertebral body to make a graft for the reconstruction. I inserted the graft using a spacer made of specialized plastic and then used a titanium plate for stability.” He added, “This is an outpatient procedure. Normally, the pain and headache get better immediately after the pressure on the spinal cord is relieved. By the next day, the patient can resume normal activities for the shoulder, arm and hand.” That’s exactly what happened for Connie.

“It was amazing,” she said. “The pain was gone from the moment I woke up. I’m able to do all the things I couldn’t do before. Dr. Majd and the staff at the Spine Center were just wonderful. I had the surgery in October and to this day, I’ve had no pain whatsoever.”
