Floyd Memorial History
In 1947, 16 local leaders saw a need to expand the aging St. Edward’s Hospital. On June 22, 1953, Memorial Hospital of Floyd County was dedicated in the memory of Floyd County community members who served during wartime.
Just over a month later Memorial Hospital, a 70-bed facility with a staff of 24 physicians, officially opened and admitted its first patients.
In 1961, the hospital initiated its first expansion project, which took the hospital from a 70 bed facility to one with 210 beds. The expansion included a Pediatric Nursing Unit, Physical Therapy Unit, EKG Department and Intensive Care Unit.
Since this first expansion, the hospital has responded to community needs and national trends by undergoing numerous renovations to provide the latest healthcare services to the region. These multi-million-dollar construction projects include the addition of a 21-bed Skilled Nursing Unit, a state-of-the-art 110,000 square foot Outpatient Services Center and a 15,500 square foot Community Health Education Center (renamed the Paris Health Education Center in 2001 in honor of Dr. and Mrs. John Paris).
In addition to these renovations, the hospital underwent a major change in 1994 — its name. The name, which had already been changed to Floyd Memorial in the late 1980′s, was altered to more accurately reflect the multi-faceted services the hospital provides the families of our community. The new name would be Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services.
In the late 1990′s, Floyd Memorial again expanded to better meet the needs of the community. This construction project included a $2 million renovation of the hospital’s Women’s Center and the creation of a new Information Technology Center.
As Floyd Memorial enters the next 50 years, it is poised to further expand and provide even more specialty services to the communities of Southern Indiana. In January of 2006, the hospital opened its new comprehensive Heart and Vascular Center with expanded intensive care and cardiovascular care units. The new state-of-the-art emergency center opened in April 2006 and includes a Critical Decision Unit, Fast Track area and a specialized Cardiac Unit and two trauma rooms. In addition, Floyd Memorial’s newly expanded Women’s Imaging Center opened in July 2006.
In October of 2007, a new Wound Healing Center was added in response to an overwhelming need in the community for quality wound care close to home. December of 2007 saw the opening of a new 10-room pediatric unit followed by further updates in May of 2008, when Floyd Memorial began welcoming post-op surgery patients to a new 32-bed Surgical Inpatient Unit, complete with all private rooms, advanced telemetry monitoring and many other amenities. In addition, two new state-of-the-art hyperbaric oxygen chambers were added to the Wound Healing Center in October of 2008. This addition brought the first and only hyperbaric oxygen therapy program to the Southern Indiana community. Most recently, an expanded Women’s Center with seven new labor and delivery suites, two c-section rooms, one antenatal room and two rooms dedicated to recovery debuted in December, 2008. The floor also includes an expanded nursery and renovated post-partum rooms.
Since its inception in 1953, Floyd Memorial has emerged to be a regional health care provider, serving a seven-county region. Its medical staff is a well-built team of more than 400 physicians, representing a variety of specialties. The hospital currently employs over 1,700 associates.
