The Floyd Memorial Hospital Laboratory has installed and will begin using their new FilmArray Respiratory Panel on Monday, May 20. Floyd Memorial is the first in the region to use this up and coming technology. The FilmArray will allow for a faster turnaround time on lab results, more efficient patient treatment overall, and will be less expensive than the traditional testing methods that are currently being used. Results that previously took four to five days will now take an hour, allowing physicians to more effectively treat their patients.
The FilmArray Respiratory Panel detects several flu viruses, RSV, whooping cough and atypical pneumonia. Prior to obtaining the FilmArray technology, lab tests had to be sent off to be analyzed, but can now be done in house.
“We had a need for improving this service. We were looking for an alternative and found this,” said Alan Elliott, Floyd Memorial Laboratory Director, who believes that this test is an improvement over the current immunoassay testing provided at most hospitals.
