Diabetes is a disease that affects 25.8 million Americans, approximately 8.3 percent of the population, according to the American Diabetes Association. And the Joslin Diabetes Center Affiliate at Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services aims to combat the diabetes epidemic with a focus on education and behavior modification, while also providing top quality medical care for those with the disease.
The center will host its annual “Diabetes Update” event on Saturday, March 10, from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. in Floyd Memorial’s Paris Health Education Center. Registration and light breakfast begin at 7:30 a.m. The program is free to the public and includes a variety of topics focusing on daily care for those with diabetes. Joslin Diabetes Center Affiliate Endocrinologist Vasti Broadstone, MD, will discuss the connection between diabetes and thyroid disease, Floyd Memorial Wound Healing Center Podiatrist Syed Ahmed, DPM, will cover diabetes foot care, and Hospital chaplain, Lenne Keithley will provide tips for maintaining one’s identity with diabetes.
In addition, a variety of diabetes-related vendors will be on hand with informational booths and free giveaways. “We are excited to be able to provide a wide range of topics this year to address issues that affect the daily life of people with diabetes,” said Amy Brown, certified diabetes educator at Floyd Memorial’s Joslin Diabetes Center Affiliate. “Advancements are continually being made in the field and the “Diabetes Update” gives our community an opportunity to learn about the newest developments and guidelines from medical experts.”
Registration is required. If you would like to attend the Diabetes Update, please call 1-800-4-SOURCE (1-800-476-8723) or sign up at www.floydmemorial.com/events.
