Floyd Memorial Announces Classes and Events for January 2011

Vascular Screenings are offered every Tuesday and Thursday by appointment in Floyd Memorial’s Heart and Vascular Center. Non-invasive screenings are available for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm, Peripheral Artery Disease and Carotid Artery Disease. Floyd Memorial’s Women’s Imaging Center offers pDXA heel screenings for osteoporosis. The pDXA screening is a scan of the bone density of the heel. The screening takes place in the Women’s Imaging Center and are offered by appointment only. The screening will be offered free for anyone who schedules during the month of January and February 2011. Floyd Memorial’s Healthier Community Initiative offers a free Car Seat Fitting Station on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. by appointment. Have your seat checked by certified car seat technicians. Each check takes about 45 minutes to one hour. Parents should bring their car seat and child along with the vehicle and car seat instruction manuals. For an appointment, call 812-949-5513.

Floyd Memorial’s Joslin Diabetes Center offers Balance and Control, recognized by the American Diabetes Association, designed for individuals looking to get their diabetes under control, new to diabetes or new to insulin. Diabetes Refresher Course is offered by Floyd Memorial’s Joslin Diabetes Center and is designed to help patients set goals for healthy management of their diabetes. Highlights include: what’s new in diabetes; understanding the numbers; counting carbohydrates; latest treatment options; evaluating old goals and setting new ones. Free Take 2 for Heart and Stroke screenings are offered on a regular basis by appointment. The screening includes a full-lipid cholesterol panel, blood pressure, body sugar, body mass index and a health history followed by a one-on-one consultation with a nurse.  Floyd Memorial’s Joslin Diabetes Center will offer a Pre-Diabetes Class on Friday, January 7 from 8 to 10:30 a.m. If you have pre-diabetes, or are overweight and 45 or older, you are at high risk of developing type-2 diabetes. The class is designed to help determine what changes are needed and set goals for living healthier. The class is self-pay and costs $25. Call 812-949-5700 for more information.

Join Bariatric and General Surgeon Ashley Lankford, MD to learn more about weight loss through gastric banding surgery. Free Bariatric Surgery Informational Sessions will be held on Tuesday, January 11 at 6 p.m. and Saturday, January 22 at 10 a.m. in Floyd Memorial Paris Health Education Center.

Floyd Memorial’s Volunteer Services offers free Blood Pressure Screenings in Floyd Memorial’s Main Lobby from 1:30 – 3 p.m. every other Friday in the Main Lobby. Screenings will be offered on January 14 and 28. Pre-registration is not required.

Operation Parent: Parenting 101 Class series will be offered in Floyd Memorial’s Paris Health Education Center on Thursday, January 13, 20, 27 and February 3 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Part of the Success by Six Parenting Workshop, This class is for parents of pre-teens and teenagers to raise awareness of today’s teen culture and give parents strategies for dealing with their teenage children and networking with other parents. On Thursday, January 13, a Drive-Thru Medication Toss will be held at Floyd Memorial’s Green Valley Road entrance from 2 to 3 p.m. Expired medications, unused medications including bulk or loose tablets and capsules will be accepted. Please do not bring needles. This event is sponsored by Floyd Memorial, Floyd County Sheriff’s Department, Floyd County Solid Waste District and Southern Indiana Triad.

Free Kidney Disease Treatment Options Class will be held in Floyd Memorial’s Paris Health Education Center on Wednesday, January 19 from 10 a.m. to Noon. Offered by Fresenius Medical Care, participants will have the opportunity to learn about the types of treatment for kidney disease including hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis for home and kidney transplants.
