Floyd Memorial Announces Classes and Events for October

Vascular Screenings are offered every Tuesday and Thursday by appointment in Floyd Memorial’s Heart and Vascular Center. Non-invasive screenings are available for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm, Peripheral Artery Disease and Carotid Artery Disease. Floyd Memorial’s Women’s Imaging Center offers pDXA heel screenings for osteoporosis. The pDXA screening is a scan of the bone density of the heel. The screening takes place in the Women’s Imaging Center and are offered by appointment only. The cost is $20. For an appointment, call Centralized Scheduling at 812-949-5570.

Floyd Memorial’s Healthier Community Initiative offers a free Car Seat Fitting Station on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. by appointment. Have your seat checked by certified car seat technicians. Each check takes about 45 minutes to one hour. Parents should bring their car seat and child along with the vehicle and car seat instruction manuals. For an appointment, call 812-949-5513.

Floyd Memorial’s Joslin Diabetes Center offers Balance and Control, a recognized by the American Diabetes Association program designed for individuals looking to get their diabetes under control, new to diabetes or new to insulin. Diabetes Refresher Course is offered by Floyd Memorial’s Joslin Diabetes Center and is designed to help patients set goals for healthy management of their diabetes. Highlights include: what’s new in diabetes; understanding the numbers; counting carbohydrates; latest treatment options; evaluating old goals and setting new ones. Floyd Memorial’s Volunteer Services offers free Blood Pressure Screening in Floyd Memorial’s Main Lobby from 1:30 – 3 p.m. every other Friday in the Main Lobby. Screenings will be offered on October 1, 15 and 29. Pre-registration is not required.

Floyd Memorial’s Total Joint Replacement Program offers free seminars to learn about the benefits of joint replacement of the knee or hip. On Monday, October 4 at 6 p.m., Orthopedic Surgeon Aniefiok Uyoe, MD and a nurse will discuss medications, exercise and total joint replacement surgery. Floyd Memorial’s Joslin Diabetes Center will offer a Pre-Diabetes Class on Friday, October 8 from 8 to 10:30 a.m. If you have pre-diabetes, or are overweight and 45 or older, you are at high risk of developing type-2 diabetes. The class is designed to help determine what changes are needed, and set goals for living healthier. The class is self-pay and costs $25. Call 812-949-5700 for more information.

This Is Your Brain on Love will be offered in Floyd Memorial’s Paris Health Education Center on Tuesday, October 12, 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Part of the Success by Six Parenting Workshop, the program will examine what parents and caregivers can do to enhance the learning opportunities of children prenatal through the early elementary years. How the brain develops will be discussed as well as participation in some hands-on activities to do at home. Presenter: Teresa S. McKay, Early Childhood Trainer/Consultant. Join Bariatric and General Surgeon Ashley Lankford, MD to find out if you are a candidate for weight loss through gastric banding surgery.  Free Bariatric Surgery Informational Sessions will be held on Tuesday, October 12 at 6 p.m. and Saturday, October 30 at 10 a.m. in Floyd Memorial Paris Health Education Center.

Free Take 2 for Heart and Stroke screenings are offered on a regular basis by appointment. The screening includes a full-lipid cholesterol panel, blood pressure, body sugar, body mass index and a health history followed by a one-on-one consultation with a nurse. On Thursday, October 14 a Drive-Thru Medication Toss will be offered at Floyd Memorial’s Green Valley Road entrance from 2 to 3 p.m. Expired medications, unused medications including bulk or loose tablets and capsules will be accepted. Please do not bring needles. This event is sponsored by Floyd Memorial, Floyd County Sheriff’s Department, Floyd County Solid Waste District and Southern Indiana Triad.
