Floyd Memorial Announces Acquisition of Cancer Center of Indiana

March 31, 2010

Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services today announced its acquisition of the nationally recognized Cancer Center of Indiana, bringing the center under the Floyd Memorial umbrella to provide an even more comprehensive approach to cancer care to patients and families throughout the region.

Medical oncologist/hematologist Naveed Chowhan, M.D., will serve as medical director of the center, which will continue to operate under the name of the Cancer Center of Indiana.

“We are very excited about this new relationship and what it means to our patients and the region,” said Dr. Chowhan. “This collaboration makes the Cancer Center of Indiana the only hospital- owned center that brings all the components of cancer diagnosis and treatment under one roof.”

For patients, the acquisition means the most comprehensive cancer care in Southern Indiana is available in one convenient location with streamlined, easy-to-access services and care – and the expert medicine and advanced treatment options for which the Cancer Center of Indiana is known. With its wide number of clinical trials, it is the second leading cancer research organization in Indiana outside the university setting. The center is nationally recognized and accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer.

The Cancer Center of Indiana opened in 2001 as a partnership between the Cancer Care Center, a medical oncology practice and Floyd Memorial’s radiation therapy department. Its services extend from traditional medical and radiation oncology to alternative approaches, including acupuncture, biofeedback and massage therapy.

“The level of care provided by the Cancer Center of Indiana to patients and families is unparalleled,” said Mark Shugarman, FACHE, president and CEO of Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services. “This is a win-win situation for all involved. The Cancer Center benefits further from the economies of being part of a larger organization. Our service line is strengthened by the best practices that have made the Cancer Center a leader in quality, high-touch care. And most importantly, patients benefit by the strengthening of what is already a nationally recognized cancer care facility close to home.”

Last year alone, the Cancer Center’s number of patient visits and consultations totaled nearly 20,000.

The Cancer Center of Indiana is located at 2210 Green Valley Road in New Albany, with a satellite office in Scottsburg and Jeffersonville, Indiana.
