Floyd Memorial Announces January Events

Floyd Memorial’s Auxiliary will sponsor a Free Blood Pressure Screening, Friday, January 22, 1:30 to 3 p.m. in the hospital’s Main Lobby. Pre-registration is not required.

Floyd Memorial’s Take 2 for Heart and Stroke is a free one-on-one screening and consultation with a nurse to assess heart attack and stroke risk. The screening includes full lipid cholesterol panel, blood pressure, blood sugar and body mass index. The next screening will be held Thursday, January 28, and pre-registration is required by calling 1-800-4-SOURCE (1-800-476-8723).

Vascular Screenings are sponsored by Floyd Memorial’s Heart and Vascular Center by appointment on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The non-invasive screenings offered check for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm, Peripheral Artery Disease and Carotid Artery Disease. The cost is $40 per screening or $100 for all three. To register, call 1-800-4-SOURCE (1-800-476-8723).

Floyd Memorial’s Women’s Imaging Center offers Osteoporosis Screenings on a regular basis by appointment. The pDXA screening is a scan of the bone density of the heel. The cost is $20. For an appointment, call Centralized Scheduling at 812-949-5570.

Have your seat checked by certified car seat technicians at Floyd Memorial’s Free Car Seat Fitting Station. Each check takes about 45 minutes to one hour and are scheduled on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Parents should bring their car seat and child along with the vehicle and car seat instruction manuals. Floyd Memorial’s Joslin Diabetes Center Affiliate offers Balance and Control, a program designed for individuals looking to get their diabetes under control, new to diabetes or new to insulin. Covered by most insurance plans. For more information, call 812-949-5700.

Diabetes Refresher Course is a program that helps patients set goals for healthy management of their diabetes. Highlights include: what’s new in diabetes; understanding the numbers; counting carbohydrates; latest treatment options; evaluating old goals and setting new ones. Covered by most insurance plans.  If you want to lose anywhere from 10 to 100 pounds, Floyd Memorial’s HMR can help. Free HMR Informational Seminars held Mondays and Wednesdays. Call 812-949-7151 for times. The program offers several diet options including a medically supervised plan, a moderate diet option and an at-home program.

 Join Barbara Bridgewater, community youth champion at Youth Count, for Asset Development, a Metro United Way Success by 6 Parenting Workshop. The class is Tuesday, January 19, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and will discuss shaping your child’s attitudes, experiences and behaviors from day one, and ways for new parents to set basic goals to make decisions and shape family life.  Floyd Memorial will host Beginning a Running Program at the YMCA Floyd County Branch, Wednesday, January 20, 6 to 7 p.m. Join Kay Vannoy, Floyd Memorial physical therapist/avid runner, and Tyler Helm, Floyd Memorial physical therapist, for tips on successfully starting a running program and minimizing injury risk.

 Floyd Memorial’s Joslin Diabetes Center Affiliate will offer a Guided Grocery Shopping for Diabetes Tour at the Jay-C Store in Salem, Thursday, January 28, 8:30-10:30 a.m. Patients with diabetes have a lot of complicated decisions to make at the grocery store. Let a certified diabetes educator take you on a free, guided tour to help make sense of it all and ensure you’re making the best choices for your health.  Floyd Memorial’s Weight Management Center will offer a Free Gastric Banding Informational Seminar, Saturday, January 23, 10 a.m. in Floyd Memorial Paris Health Education Center.  Floyd Memorial’s Women’s Center will sponsor Infant Massage, a class that teaches how to perform newborn massage as a way to bond with your baby, Monday, January 25, 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. All participants are asked to bring a doll or stuffed animal to practice with.  Sibling Class will be held Saturday, January 30, 10:30 a.m. to Noon by Floyd Memorial’s Women’s Center for soon-to-be new brothers and sisters, ages 3 to 11, and their parents. Children will be shown how to diaper and hold a baby (doll), and tour the Women’s Center where they get to listen to the baby’s heartbeat.  C-section classes are schedule on an individual basis by appointment. Goals of the class are to learn options available to you with a cesarean birth, to reduce fears and anxieties by obtaining knowledge about the procedures, and to take an active role in creating a satisfying birth experience.
